Baggage

Gok WanGok Wan, not content with advising people on fashion and beauty and having a whole line of beauty products, has now set out to conquer the dating world. His new dating show, Baggage, which premiered last Friday on Channel 4 aims to set up singles by revealing their embarrassing secrets and issues. If they can deal with them, the couple win a holiday together. “It’s a ticking lovebomb!” Gok brags in the advert for the show. I had to tune in, if only to see which outfit Gok would be wearing!

Dating shows have always been popular and with the success of Take Me Out, Channel 4 are no doubt hoping that Baggage will have a similar cult following. Gok Wan, wearing an amazing sparkly suit and looking smug was aiming to be a modern day Cilla Black as he revealed the contestants darkest secrets and things they are ashamed of. The candidates were all shiny, young and good-looking, probably hand-picked by Gok himself. The first candidate Gary, 26 who is a firefighter had to choose between three girls with different kinds of baggage. This ranged from a love of mirrors and the admission that she can’t stop looking at herself to more serious issues – one candidate admitted he was wanted by debt collectors (well that wont stay a secret for long after announcing it on national TV). One candidate, Lauren, was adamant she had lived before and had died on the Titanic in a previous life, despite not having any proof at all of this.

The ultimate premise of Baggage is to test whether people are willing to accept their potential partners, flaws and all and really, this is what Take Me Out focuses on too. For me, Baggage has none of the comedy or fun of Take Me Out and is unlikely to become a Friday night must-see, but it did make me think about what the deal breakers for me would be – is there any piece of baggage that I’d be completely unwilling to accept? The truth is, everyone has baggage whether it be weird obsessions, quirky beliefs or more serious secrets and if I meet someone I really like, I hope that I will be able to accept them, flaws and all…
