Canada Kate

William and Kate in CanadaWilliam and Kate had been married barely a month before it was time to undertake their first official foreign tour of duty as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Heading first to Canada and then on to L.A for a couple of days, it was clear from the offset that most of the attention would not be directed at William.

Ever since she stepped out in THAT Reiss dress to announce the couple’s engagement, Kate Middleton went from being the smiling on-off girlfriend of Prince William, usually pictured in ski-wear, to an overnight style icon. Not much pressure there then! Whilst many would have become overwhelmed by this, either shrinking into the background by always wearing black or going the complete opposite way and getting it embarrassingly wrong every time, Kate has taken on this sudden title with self-assurance and grace.

Kate Middleton - Jenny Packham dressThe trip to Canada was no exception as Kate confidently declined a stylist, claiming that she felt happy enough to be in control of choosing her own outfits. Kate did however, request the company of her hairdresser, James Pryce, on the trip, perhaps foreseeing the delay from alighting the plane in Ottawa airport due to ‘emergency hair tying-up’ because of the wind. Well, she is a princess after all!

With an olive complexion and long dark hair, there are not many colours that Kate need be afraid of. Stepping off the plane, Kate’s dark blue Erdem lace dress painted her as the glamorous royal wife she is, whereas just a few days later, Kate appeared in a pristine white Issa dress, teamed with a bright red Canadian maple leaf hat, proving that she has a great sense of fun. Whilst Kate’s official status dictates sensible attire, it has to be said that she looks especially beautiful when she raises the hemline just a couple of inches above the usual knee length and experiments a little with the design. A great example of this was the Jenny Packham dress Kate sported at another Canadian airport. With its buttoned detailing and primrose yellow colour, Kate proved that she was very on trend.

Kate’s iconic status particularly appeals as it is not too far away from a look we can all create ourselves, and demonstrates that one dress (and a good pair of heels!) is all it takes to look effortlessly stylish. With Canada now in the distance and Kate and William flying back to the UK, all we have to do now is wait patiently for the next public appearance…
