Happy Birthday Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain - gorgeous and truly missedAs Whitney Houston’s fans and family struggle to come to terms with her death after her funeral on Saturday, I was reminded that today, February 20th, should have been the birthday of another star who passed away too soon – Kurt Cobain. The frontman of Nirvana died in April 1994, after apparently committing suicide in Seattle, Washington.

Kurt’s personality and Nirvana’s music started the grunge era of the 90s – and though I am happy to say that I was too young to appreciate Nirvana when they were popular, I have gotten to love them in recent years. Their grungey, sometimes depressing songs really contrast with my obsession with RnB, the colour pink and all things glitter, but there is something about their songs that I love.

Not only did they inspire a new genearation of music with hits like “Smells like teen spirit” and “Lithium”, they also started the 90s fashion grunge craze, which Topshop is bringing back to life this season. Their range includes denim jackets, ripped jeans and T-shirts.

However, like Whitney, Kurt had his problems and his death was a huge blow to the music world. 18 years later, Kurt is still missed and loved by his fans. However, like Whitney, he will always be considered an icon and on what would have been his 45th birthday, one of his most famous quotes still rings true:

“I’d rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not.” Wise words for us all to live by. Happy birthday Kurt.
