Much to the surprise of the world, Jennifer Lopez and her husband, Marc Anthony, have announced they are to separate after seven years of marriage.
During their marriage they have worked together on various projects together, including starring together in the film El Cantante, released in 2006, and working on music recordings together. The couple are also said to produce a Latin American talent competition, Q’Viva, together.
The seemingly happy couple married in 2004 and gave birth to their twins Max and Emme three years ago.
Lopez’s representative Mark Young released a statement claiming, “This was a very difficult decision…we have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters…we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time.”
This is Jennifer Lopez’s third divorce and Marc Anthony’s second. Lopez first married Cuban born waiter Ojani Noa in 1997. She then married her second husband, her former backup dancer Chris Judd, in 2001. Less than a year later they too had split up although the divorce was finalised in January of 2003. Back on the dating scene, Lopez was snatched up by Ben Affleck when the pair began dating and quickly became nicknamed Bennifer by the press. The new pair were engaged to be married but Lopez reportedly became frustrated with Affleck’s constant delaying of the marriage plus displays of aloofness. Lopez gave Affleck an ultimatum and consequently the pair parted ways. Lopez and Anthony began dating shortly after the split from Affleck. Marc Anthony was previously married to a former Miss Universe, Dayanara Torres. The pair divorced in October of 2003 and he married Lopez in June 2004.
Lopez, 41, a mega star before her marriage to Marc Anthony, declared on Thursday that she was undecided as to whether she would return as a judge for the second season on the TV show American Idol. She had originally signed a one year contract to appear on the show for $12 million.
Marc Anthony, 42, was also a massive star in his own right before the two celebrities became a hot Hollywood couple. He has won two Grammys and according to the Los Angeles Times he is the top-selling salsa artist of all time. He is without a doubt a huge star in the Latino world of showbiz.
Only last year, Lopez and Anthony renewed their vows on their sixth wedding anniversary. Lopez has talked happily about her life as a wife and mother on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Lopez, Anthony and twins seemed to be the happy unit we all wanted them to be. It’s always a shame to see these seemingly happy families break up. Perhaps Lopez shares a trait with the legendary Elizabeth Taylor… perhaps she just falls in love a lot and thinks marriage is always the natural conclusion.
