Spice Girls at Olympics

Even at the Olympics closing ceremony I could not contain my excitement for the reuniting performance of the Spice Girls and wow was it worth the wait.

Arriving in lit up black cabs to perform their hit singles ‘Wannabe’ and ‘Spice Up Your Life’, the Spice Girls then proceeded to parade around the Olympic Stadium on top of their respective cabs reinstalling girl power everywhere.

Each Spice Girl even lived up to their own name through their costumes. Victoria Beckham was picture perfect (and pout perfect too) in a posh Giles Deacon dress. Scary Spice – Mel B – sparkled in a wild and fantastic glittering gold jumpsuit whilst Geri Halliwell sported a short red number accustomed with her iconic look of the Union Jack. Baby Spice – Emma Bunton – looked incredible in a hot pink mini dress and Mel C went for a high end sporty look with an all white flared jumpsuit, specially made by JD sports, complete with silver sequinned wedge trainers.

To see my childhood icons come together yet again has only increased my need, let alone my want, for an official reuniting of the Spice Girls to make one more album and one more tour, then maybe another album…! I know I am not alone in this request, yes I am talking to you Boris Johnson after your sensational dance moves which, on behalf of Great Britain, I thank you for providing endless entertainment.

However, perhaps I am asking too much, the last time the five Spice Girls were together was four years ago for their final tour. Yet there is still always hope. The power that these five women still have in the world today when they all come together is incredible. You only have to look at the reception that the public and the media have given them since their performance, and rightly so. The Spice Girls are an iconic British pop band of the 90s embracing girl power for young females worldwide, and their inclusion in the London Olympic closing ceremony represented everything that the 90s pop culture was about. Their performance was exciting, fun and full of girl power, and for these reasons I will always be a proud Spice Girls fan.

Now to dig out my Spice World VHS…
