Fifties fashion has a great way of bringing that feminine, summery feel to your wardrobe. Think polka dots, full dresses, high waist shorts, frills, cat’s eyes sunglasses and stripes.
Bright colours are aplenty when it comes to this trend and it’s one that you will see increasingly more of as the weather improves.
Whilst the post-war days of the 1940s were characterised by flat colours and frugality, the 1950s introduced an upbeat attitude infused with colour and glamour. Full dresses that enhanced the female hour glass figure were everywhere to be seen whilst often retaining modesty with the midi length dresses and skirts. However, a sense of frivolity was also to be witnessed, as is evident from the frilly lower necklines and the cute leg baring playsuits.
As this period of fashion was very much centered on femininity, the fabrics were also quite delicate and flattering. Lace, chiffon, and other transparent fabrics would be seen layered over underlining. Again, you will see a lot of lace during SS12 just as we did during 2011 although this time around there will be a greater array of colours and styles. Lace will feature heavily throughout summer but as Autumn/Winter 2012 approaches another 50s trend of velvet will also make a reappearance.
If in doubt of how to channel the 50s vibe, think Grease and 1950s pinups.
