Romance is in the air with the arrival of the most awaited film of the coming year, The Great Gatsby, and along with the roaring Twenties of course comes glitz and glamour. It’s the book that inspired Kate Moss’s ethereal wedding day, and countless more. F.Scott Fitzgerald’s celebrated novel set in the heart of the Twenties, a time beguiled by magic and splendour is soon to be upon us. And now as Carey Mulligan prepares to breathe new life into Miss Daisy Buchanan, the fashion pack is alight with possibility as to what costumes the film adaptation will deliver.
Spilling out of the SS12 runway collections were throes of rich fabrics, gold, sequins, feathers and fringe, geometric prints and art deco revivals, and the instantly identifiable drop waist. The clothes moved effortlessly on the runways, with the gold ornate embellishments and fringed hemlines catching the light and the spirits from decades past. Decadent designs for a decadent era.
Ralph Lauren channelled the spirit in true Americana style. Gatsby-esque separates were in abundance, from ruffled silk blouses, pretty cashmere cardigans, floral skirts and wedged sandals in pastels colours. And come evening, Gucci directed a decisively more feminineflapper girl guise with loose sleeveless tops, while at Etro, sparkling flapper dresses in plush bright tones were favoured.
So which fashion royalty will contribute their designs to Gatsby’s darling? We’re imagining elegant maxi gowns tipped with ostrich feathers and opulent materials with flecks of subtle beading as seen at Temperley and Dries Van Noten.
So, throw a lawn party and find some pearls. It’s time to start dreaming…
