Fresher Fashion

You’re moving away from your home city and have a million and one things to worry about; making new friends, paying bills for the first time and having to navigate your way around different streets. These are the primary worries for most fresher students but once you’ve settled in and attending lectures through the day and partying all night becomes the norm, it’s your wardrobe you’ll be worrying about if you are the fashion conscious type.

The key is not to panic and invest in a few must have essentials to get you through your university life and simply update your wardrobe during high street sales, as well as scouring eBay and vintage markets. Although it has been six years since I was enjoying my fresher’s week (eek!) some of the must have pieces remain the same…

MOTO Blue Supersoft Skinny Leigh Jeans - £38.00, TopshopThe Jeans
Probably the most important university clothing investment, so if you’re only buying one key piece definitely spend your only pennies on a decent pair of these. Be sure to check out high street stores such as Topshop and New Look both of which offer a healthy student discount with a NUS card. Topshop have everything from the essential skinny indigos, to floral, polka dot and stripe prints ranging from £38 to £42. Remember a good pair of jeans will last you the whole three years and more!

The Basic Tees
I would suggest a visit to Primark or H&M for your basic tees and vest tops. You’re likely to live in such clothing through the daytime, so buy plenty of them! There’s a huge range of colours and fits available at Primark with prices from a mere £1!

The Jumper

Thick knit chunky jumpers are bang on trend this Autumn/Winter and they’ll act as your comfort blanket while nursing that hangover during lectures. Urban Outfitters have a quirky range of printed and contrast colour knitwear as well as must have turquoise and maroon autumn shades.

The Hoodie
Show your support for your place of education by buying your University hoodie. Six years on mine is still as comfy as ever and it doesn’t even bear any bobbles yet!

10-pack rings - £2.99, H&MThe Heels
Every student needs a pair a pair of heels they can wear on every night out. I invested in a pair of black Kurt Geiger’s during a half price sale and I can honestly say they are super comfy and can be worn with almost everything! You know what type of heel you feel happy all night long in, whether it’s a wedge, a strappy stiletto or a more comfortable court shoe.

Statement Accessories
When you find yourself wearing that same dress on every night out simply jazz it up with some statement accessories. Why not try a bit of DIY costume jewellery making, its very easy to make rings, earrings and hair accessories at costs as little as 20p if you can source your findings cheaply! Local vintage fairs often provide the best choice of unique statement pieces. But if you need an extremely quick fix pop down to Primark who currently have some fantastic metal collars and cuffs to enhance any neckline.
