Ah the midi dress, a growing favourite amongst high street stores and all of you fashionistas alike, and definitely a new favourite in my own wardrobe. Yet with its awkward length, especially for 5ft 1’ females like myself and with the days becoming colder you may be wondering just how do I wear my oh so beautiful bodycon midi dress?! Well have no fear ladies, help is here with my ‘How to Wear’ guide…
1) The Shoes
The midi dress looks at its best when teamed with a great pair of heels. Whether it’s your favourite killer heels or mid-heel ankle boots, heels will elongate your body making the midi cut off a flattering and sophisticated look. If you are not a fan of ball aching feet then flat ankle boots will also work seemingly for a casual day-time look. However, flat pumps and a midi dress? That’s just a no-go!
2) The Knit
Dress down any midi dress this season by throwing on a chunky knit for an effortless laid-back look. Not only will you still look chic you will be winter-friendly and even purse-friendly by re-cycling your midi dress for a pencil skirt. Who doesn’t love creating a whole new outfit?! Try colour blocking oxblood with dark emerald green for a truly winter colour palette, clashing patterns, or playing safe with neutral tones.
3) The Jacket
Leather or fur. Take your pick ladies because both of these are so hot for Autumn/Winter it would be cruel not to indulge. Leather jackets, a staple piece to any wardrobe; throw this over any midi dress to toughen it up and try adding a faux fur collar for an instant glam-grunge style (yes I realise it sounds like ‘Gangnam Style’ that was not my intention). Fur coats and gilets are perfect for keeping warm this winter and add a nice textured layer on top of any midi dress you choose to wear. Don’t be afraid to try a different colour fur coat for a more eccentric spin to your outfit. However, black and browns work just as well to create the perfect cover up for your midi dress.
4) The Statement Necklace
Add a statement necklace to any midi dress, especially those consisting of one bold colour to create an instant edge. By keeping other accessories minimal it allows your dress to do all the showing off. There are a variety of statement necklaces available; the question is just how STATEMENT are you daring to go?! For already statement midi’s such as prints, lace or other detailed designs, a statement necklace, is probably most best left on your jewellery stand.
And that’s it! Four easy ‘How To Wear’ steps for the perfect styling of the midi dress. Just one last top tip – don’t be afraid to wear a bodyshaper underneath your dress, it creates a smooth silhouette hiding every lump and bump – try not to think too much of Bridget Jones here!
With midi dresses galore on the high street and online, hopefully you will no longer be afraid to wear them with complete confidence.
