Fashion for Autumn/Winter 2011 is getting a new face in the form of the Caribbean model Melodie Monrose. The Martinique beauty that stands at a statuesque 5.10 was only discovered a few weeks before the spring 2011 castings began!
Freshly signed to Wilhelmina, she has already walked the runway for Marc Jacobs, DKNY, Rag & Bone, Jason Wu, Prada, Missoni, Bottega Veneta and Gucci. Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent have also featured her in their Paris Collections. Vogue Italia featured the fresh-faced beauty on a cover shoot along with Chanel Iman and Jourdan Dunn. Her modelling experience is already boasting big names and it is clear that Monrose is going to make a big impact on the modelling circuit. She walked 49 shows in her first season alone, is studying at Paris 8 University whilst modelling and has Coco Rocha as a mentor to help with her posing!
Not only is this obviously a big step for Monrose but it is equally a big step for young black female models. Monrose is slowly building up the credentials of black females in fashion and like that of Iman and Dunn, is carving a secure spot. Showing how beauty can be diverse, Monrose boasted an afro in a shoot for Gareth Pugh, photos were taken by Terry Tsiolis. It not only fits in perfectly with the tribal theme that has engulfed summer this year, but shows the black female in her true glory.
Dazed and Confused, Interview and V Magazine have also featured her in their editorials, which for a new model is impressive. At the tender age of 18 Monrose still has many more levels to achieve and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this Caribbean beauty.
