Steal her style… Katy Perry

Its been a bloody good year for Katy Perry, from kissing girls to kissing Russell Brand, a sell out tour, the launch of a perfume, a new album and a whole bunch of hit singles, the list goes on and on. And as if this wasn’t enough for 2010, the stylish singer has managed to squeeze in an appearance on the cover of this months American Harper’s Bazaar magazine with her lips covered in Swarovski crystals! The limited edition cover is remarkably similar to the iconic Vogue cover of January 1950.

The star has accomplished all of this whilst looking fabulous every step of the way. Her style is fun, quirky and stands out from the crowd for all the right reasons (without covering herself in meat, mistaking pork for Prada, like Lady Gaga.) Yes, when it comes to fashion Mrs Brand knows how to rock the kitsch look.

So as a bit of a fashion tribute and to show you that you too can pull off a quirky look. Here are some of Katy’s outfits, and how you can steal her style on a high street budget! (Just in time for the January sales!!)

With a look which can be seen as reminiscent to a 1950’s pin up girl, Katy is a lover of bright block colours. She’s not scared of making a statement and doesn’t shy away from mixing and matching vintage and modern styles. Try experimenting with block colours which you wouldn’t usually put together to create a modern look. A particular favourite of Katy’s is mixing pastel colours; going for pink shorts with a blue top.

She is also a huge fan of figure loving playsuits and hot pants, but with the weather not yet allowing us to bear our legs without them going numb from the cold, go for a jumpsuit in a floral pattern for the perfect winter alternative.

Katy is cartoon crazy (not forgetting the Jessica rabbit inspired sequin dress she wore to the VH1 Divas concert) and there’s nothing quirkier than a retro tee, it couldn’t be easier to get the look with the high street being full of Disney inspired t-shirts. Why not try and pick from one of your old favourite cartoon characters. Katy has even launched her own range of t-shirts which reflect the quirky cartoon style perfectly.

Moving on to party wear, often rocking glitter and sparkles on the red carpet, she allows her glamorous side to shine through with outfits inspired by the catwalk. For the recent American music awards show, Katy wore a stunning Badgley Mischka Couture dress and Brian Atwood heels.

Okay, so you’ve got the outfit sorted, now down to the fingernails. Who could forget Katy’s iconic nail design covered with photos of her hubby? But if you’re at the point in your relationship where covering your nails with photos of your boyfriend would look a little more stalkerish than sexy, there’s a few pretty good alternative in the stick on range. Or even go for a bold neon colour like the yellow Katy wore to the MTV movie awards to really make an outfit stand out.

Katy Perry’s style isn’t for everyone, but whether you love it or hate it, you have to admit it takes guts to reflect your personality in such a vibrant way with critics out to scrutinize every outfit choice! Her humour plays a big part in the clothes she wears because after all, why take life so seriously?!
