Tones of camel, cognacs and chunky knits, cashmere lined leather gloves with heavy, cosy coats against autumnal checked scarves and knitted turbans warming frosty lobes.
As much as the delayed week of summer was warmly welcomed, the surge of brisk wind and chilly temperatures seem set to keep our sandals firmly in hibernation for at least another six months.
Winter has officially arrived.
Previous seasons brought nudes, stark whites and macaroon shades reminiscent of French patisseries, but for those who would rather huddle by the fire, than hang by the pool, the colder months are worth celebrating. From Vince’s mocha waterfall knits to River Island’s striking block coloured jumpers. Even the modern classic jumper dress saw a pastel pink revival. Yes, winter is here again, as women everywhere swap an open toe for shearling as they slip out of their sleeveless tees and slink begrudgingly into their textured, layered knits.
With temperatures continuing to fall, as are hemlines, and, paired with autumns favourite; the long and lean skirt and some classic camel outerwear will allow for a minimal yet feminine appeal. Those still yearning for sparkle can find comfort in sequin embellished sweaters while yellow and orange neon’s were seen at Jill Stuart who incorporated the bold colour with tan, the perfect way to inject some much needed colour into dull wardrobes during the bleak winter months.
Earthy palettes can be prettied up with a wintry floral print. “This season’s play on texture extends to accessories – shaggy Mongolian fur makes for a fun tote while a silk shirt adds a luxe, ladylike element to chunky cardigans and tweedy jackets,” explains fashion writer, Julia Hobbs. “Revisiting duffel fastenings and Aran sweaters will add an air of authenticity.”
So for those secretly hoping that summer would, perhaps, return for even a second longer, instead, embrace the cosiness of tweed blazers with soft leather elbow patches, maxi skirts, and knee-high leather boots with quilted jackets, blankets on rainy afternoons and indulge in some comforting seasonal treats.
