60s and 70s Winter Wardrobe

Bianca Jagger - Gala in Honor of George Cukor - April 30, 1978Autumn/Winter 2011 is going to see, once again, the return of the modern mod and the hippy!

The sixties, famed for Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton and mini-skirt creator Mary Quant, will introduce its strong influence of London. Polo necks, shift dresses, polka dots, block colours of red, white and yellows and peter pan collars are going to be the main looks. The retro style influx will be a key trend within many shops, designer as well as high street.

River Island features the GIGI look of the sixties, which perfectly captures the model and movie stars of the sixties. Their Edie Skirt, £28, combined with the Contrast Blouse, £30, creates the ultimate monochrome sixties look! The Short Jacket, £34.99, is also a key piece to the whole sixties theme. It adds a pop of red to the wardrobe and features structured pockets and enlarged buttons, remember, the sixties is all about the details! River Island also feature the signature Fitted Polo Neck, £22, which comes in classic black. Perhaps try teaming it with their Pleated Skirt, £32, a mini-skirt that has mixed fabrics and textures together, where one half of the skirt is colour panelled with buttons, leaving the other half covered in tweed!

As well as the sixties, River Island  has beautifully captured the seventies, accentuating the need for glamorous nights, full of divas and discos. The look has largely been based around the Studio 54 dance floor regulars, Bianca Jagger, Diana Von Furstenberg and Anjelica Huston. If you want to reignite the seventies in your wardrobe then the key pieces that need to be recognised are faux furs, sheer chiffons, and rich, jewel tones of sapphire, ruby and emerald and gold accessories.

The Hustle look of River Island  provides the Faux Fur Jacket, £80, a versatile jacket that can be teamed with a dress as well as casual jeans. The Halter Maxi Dress, £45, comes in a rich sapphire with a trim of gold around the neck line, perfect when teamed with Strappy Wedges £55 in gold. The seventies are famed for their jumpsuits, so another key item is the teal Jumpsuit, £50, that looks glamorous when teamed with Peep Toe Wedges, £70, in ruby red.

Although winter is all about cosy layering and big winter coats, there is still evidence of sexy outfits, and glamorous dresses that will bring femininity to your wardrobe.
