The last time I wore an outfit inspired by the film 101 Dalmations was fifteen years ago; a white pair of cycling shorts with black spots and a matching t-shirt bearing a few of the famous dalmations from the 1996 film. But in February this year we saw the only high street brand on the London Fashion Week catwalk bearing symbolisms of the Cruella De Vil style in their autumn/winter collection.
I was extremely surprised and equally excited to see the spotty trend return to the fashion scene. Dalmation prints breathe new life into animal inspired prints; we too often see leopard and zebra printed garments move in and out of fashion.
The dalmation detailing is evident in differing forms across Topshop Unique’s autumn/winter collection; from repeat spotty prints and dog silhouette prints to character t-shirts and faux fur. If you’re looking to invest in one statement piece this autumn a pair of dalmation printed shoes or boots are the answer.
I adore the brushed leather dalmation print Mary Jane style shoes, which boast thick black velvet ribbon ties and chunky heels. Finer details such as pewter leather piping add an element of sophistication to these glamorous statement shoes. If the print on these shoes is just a little too bold for you then be sure to grab them in a more subtle black or pewter patent leather.
Designers at Topshop Unique have managed to capture the dramatic style of fictional character Cruella De Vil in a range of outerwear including evening and trench coats, kimonos and devore jackets. Drama and glamour oozes from the black midi evening coat, large faux fur cuffs on three quarter length sleeves compliment its simple silhouette.
If you don’t have a large budget there are plenty of other more affordable dog-inspired options. Try some dalmation print nail wrap priced at just £7.00; they are a quick and easy solution to insert this animal print trend into your look. Or perhaps check out cute dog studded belts, there are four to choose from. The belts are priced at £26-£28 and come in black, red, blue and a black/white spotty prints.
