State Style

Already dubbed as a style icon, Michelle Obama kept the stakes high on her just completed visit to Britain; accompanying husband Barack on his first state visit. Stepping off the plane in Stanstead wearing a befitting Preen royal blue two piece before departing for Buckingham Palace, her hotel for the duration of her stay, Michelle Obama epitomised glamour. Most of us would look a fatigued and dreary picture after stepping off a flight, zapped of moisture and deprived of sleep (especially after Guinness drinking in Ireland!), but not Michelle.

A costume change later and America’s First Lady appeared with her husband to watch a soldiers parade in the grounds of Buckingham Palace, together with her welcoming hosts, the Queen and Prince Phillip. On a day in which the wind was so strong it was causing headaches, mascara streaming eyes and the inability to walk in a straight line, the question on everyone’s lips must have been, how did Michelle Obama manage to remain knickers flashing free?! Yet she did, keeping her dress under control in a very calm and composed manner. Wearing a teal knee length, silk Barbara Tfank dress, Michelle made a bold statement, mixing this subtle number with a bright pink bolero jacket and completing the look with an elegant pair of spiky heeled sling-backs. Standing confidently next to two of the most influential leaders in the world, Michelle Obama’s assertive yet feminine style exemplified power and allowed her to stand alone as a public figure and a role model.

What we did not see as Michelle and Barack Obama stepped off the plane at Stanstead was the unloading of their luggage; however Michelle must have needed at least ten suitcases in order to cope with her state visit wardrobe. Later that evening, attending a banquet at Buckingham Palace, Michelle emerged looking like a princess, wearing a luxurious long, white Tom Ford gown teamed with matching long white gloves, a royal dress to rival that of Pippa Middleton’s. Whilst most of us would have endeavoured to blag as much on the house champagne as possible, there was no sign of this on Michelle’s face the next day as she helped host a barbeque at Number Ten Downing Street.

Still looking as vivacious as ever, Michelle chose a very pretty and demure, black and white monochrome, long sleeved Tracy Reese dress. A perfect party outfit, yet still sophisticated enough to be worn during the day. This appeared to be a much more wise choice than Sam Cam’s summery white number with a silky green belt around the waist; a beautiful outfit yet surely not the best idea when surrounded by grease, ketchup and children!

The state visit now over and political relations secured, Michelle Obama left nothing but a highly impressive thumbs up for her fashion choices. However, she must be exhausted and I cannot help but wonder if she will return to the White House, throw on a tracksuit and spend a day or two drinking tea and watching daytime television…
