I recently got back from a holiday in Portugal with my family having stayed at the Vilamoura resort, which is located on the beautiful marina on the Algarve. The place is a popular resort for golfers due to the large amount of golf courses in the area. However, it is also a great getaway for families due to its relaxing and quiet surroundings. The marina itself was filled with restaurants and a few bars but we mostly spent our evenings eating in the many places that were on offer.
In terms of food I would rate the place very highly as there were a huge array of different restaurants, ranging from traditional Portuguese to Swedish and Chinese. As it was located on the marina the selection of fish was also incredible. It was lovely to spend our evenings looking out onto the marina whilst indulging in delicious and rich foods. Although busy at night the place has a very calm feel to it, so it was easy for us to kick back and relax.
If you’re looking for a place with nightclubs, then Vilamoura is definitely not the place. The Marina is busy at night but mostly with couples and families and there are no clubs apart from the casino and a small disco. In order to find nightlife you must travel outside of the area. Albufeira is a short cab ride away and has a huge amount of bars and clubs, which makes it a popular destination for young people.
The beach was a reasonable ten minute walk from our hotel so we found ourselves spending most of our days there sunbathing. The beach itself was lovely and didn’t get too busy during the day. The beach bar where we ate lunch most days had a great selection of food, albeit slightly over-priced.
Along the marina there are a huge amount of activities on offer such as parasailing and boat trips. If you’re the sporty type who enjoys being outdoors, then this area has a range of fun things on offer to cater to your needs. If you enjoy being busy and exploring new places abroad, then there are a lot of excursions to be done to places such as Seville. One day we took a trip to Lisbon, the capital and largest city of Portugal. The city itself was beautiful and very archaic looking with a great amount of shopping. Unfortunately we didn’t get to spend a great amount of time there as we were on a time limit with our tour. However, I can imagine the city being perfect for a weekend city break as there is a lot to explore there.
I’d have to say the only down side to the holiday was the amount of British tourists. When I go away I like to distance myself from the comforts of home and hope to immerse myself in a new culture. Vilamoura was over-run with Brits and was, therefore, not the best place to be if wanting to experience a new culture. The resort was also very expensive and resembled London prices. However, if you need a relaxing getaway and your idea of heaven is relaxing on a beach all day, then I would definitely recommend Vilamoura.
